Please add my updated "Styles" color scheme for Kaleidoscope, Lace and
Sapphires, to the Recent Additions section of the HyperArchive. Thank
you very much.

Lace and sapphires was originally part of a set of three color schemes.
It is done in blue and lavender tones with a touch of sapphire gems and
lace, with custom default folder and custom matching trash. Textures to
go with the scheme are also included. Compressed by Binhex.

Acme Filters 2.3.6 (C)1997 by Eric V. Curtis All rights reserved

Acme Filters takes the place of many separate freeware/shareware
utilities you may be currently using. It started out as a simple
file converter to translate some old Smith-Corona word processor
files into text files I could use on my Macintosh. Then I realized
my code would make a good shell for any type of drag-and-drop filter.
So, I combined several filters I occasionally use into one "all-purpose"
drag-and-drop application. Full source code is also included so you
can add your own filters or modify the included filters.

Subject: [*] Akua Sweets 106

AKUA Sweets V1.06
Released: 21.August, 1997 (Beba's Birthday!)

Changes in V1.06
+ Added canceled property to a ProgressWindow. + Time elapsed/remaining
and cancel message now shown in progress window. + Canceling now "knows"
if it is in the background and ignores Command-Option if so. + Fixed a
bug that could have caused the second running of an AkuaCopy-using
script to crash. + Will now detect progress over 100% or under 0% and
just flash the progress bar.

A set of handy osaxen, including:

display progress [progWind] [titled "My Operation"] [subtitled "My
Object"] [labeled "My Short Label"] [value idx] [maximum cnt] [located
at savedLoc] [with(out) alternate color] [with(out) death] This function
will allow you to display a progress window.
the kind of entry in =8A named =8A [with(out) creation] This is a simple
function that checks for the existance of a file or folder within
another folder.

ResolveWith
ResolveTo
Both functions resolve an alias file with the ability to enter the
User/Password in a possible resulting server dialog. Both take a "User"
and a "Password" parameter. The only difference is ResolveWith will only
resolve one level deep and return an error code.

AkuaCopy
AkuaCopy supports the following features: + The copy operation
accelerates and/or decelerates as necessary (useful for ARA connections)
to attempt to give the system time about 5 times per second - i.e. allow
you to do other work while it is running. + The copy operation shows a
status about what it is doing. + The parameters are very simple. Two
files, a source and a destination as aliases. The name of the file stays
the same. And to really complicate matters, you can specify whether or
not AkuaCopy should overwrite an existing destination file with the same
name. + You can even click somewhere outside the status window to switch
applications and let the copy progress in the background. + AkuaCopy
supports the ability to resume a copy. This is useful for a copy that is
broken by a network interruption.

Subject: [*] CMTools 2.0.1

CMTools is a plug-in that extends the Contextual Menu of Mac OS 8. In
programs that support the Contextual Menu, such as the Finder, it provides
the following functions:

	- Launch for applications, files and folders
	- Create aliases directly in your preferred folders.
	- Decompress files.
	- Compress any items (documents, folders, applications, etc...).
	- Copy files and folders.
	- Move files and folders.
	- Change the creator and type codes of files.
	- Open files directly with your preferred applications.

You organize the menus as it suits you, by creating and organizing files
and aliases in a special folder in the Finder.

New features and improvements:

	- Appending "+" to the name of a folder alias will enable display
of its contents in the menus.
	- You can put an alias of the selection directly in the CMTool's
hierarchy.
	- Launcher sub-menus contain an item that opens their parent menu's
folder.
	- Decompress works on files that have the StuffIt creator code,
regardless of suffix.
	- CMTools no longer displays multiple menu separators together.
	- Alias files are resolved quietly.
	- Printers are treated differently than files or folders.

			Bugs fixed:
	- A memory leak which could cause a crash (please, upgrade).
	- A bug which might prevent mounting disk (2.0.1)

delta xy is a FREE mouse coordinate measurement program. It
allows you to make precise measurements of just about anything
on your computer's monitors. It can also show you the ASCII
character and key codes for most of the keys on your keyboard,
and the RGB values of any pixel on your monitor. All values
can be copied to the clipboard and viewed in either decimal or
hexadecimal.

This is a great tool for HTML and AppleGuide authors!

New in this version:
* Clicking and dragging the mouse draws a box on screen to make
  it easier to measure rectangles.
* Rectangles can be viewed as (left, top, right, bottom) or
  (top,left,bottom,right).
* Rectangle coordinates are automatically copied to the
  clipboard.
* RGB colors can now be viewed as either 8-bit or 16-bit values.
* A color swatch helps you measure small areas of color.
* Can have delta xy attempt to bring itself to the foreground.

Deskpop 1.0b4
copyright (=A9) 1997, by Reuven J. Sherwin, Ra'anana, Israel
email: roov@pitango.com

What does "Deskpop" do?
Deskpop is a Control Strip module which lists all volumes, folders and
files currently on the Mac's desktop. This is especially useful for the
(hopefully short) time the desktop is cluttered. Folders are displayed
with the underline style. Volumes (a.k.a. Disks) are displayed with the
bold bold+underline style. The Trash is displayed with the bold style.

Selecting an item from the Deskpop menu will open it.
Holding down the Shift+Option keys will reveal it in the Finder.
Holding down the Shift+Delete keys will move the selected item to the Trash.
If the selected item is a volume, Shift+Delete have no affect on it.

Requirements
Requires Mac OS 7.1 or better, and scriptable Finder (which is
integrated into Mac OS 7.5 and better, I believe).

Installing "Deskpop"
To install Deskpop in Mac OS 8, simply drag it over the active system
folder then restart the Mac.
Otherwise, place it in the "Control Strip Modules" folder within the active
system folder, then restart the Mac.

=46reeware
Pass it on, give it away, trash it - I don't mind.
But if you do pass it on, please try to include this document with it.
If you use Deskpop and email me with "I Use Deskpop" in the subject of the
email, I'll inform you of new versions of Deskpop.
Please email me bugs, compatability problems or suggestions.

FolderBuilder 1.3:

FolderBuilder, a publishing/archiving helper utility for MacOS, allows you
to automatically create dated, hierarchical folders. Great for
organizing/archiving date specific material! Before FolderBuilder, I used
to have to type in goofy leading characters on the filenames of my dated
archiving folders so they would sort properly. It took a while to create
the folders by hand and type in filenames. Regardless of how careful I was,
I'd always get a few typographical errors. Since I was creating a digital
archive that will probably outlive me, this was unacceptable. I was
frustrated. So, I developed a tool to solve the problem -- FolderBuilder.

Subject: [*] Ghost 2.0 - Super File Hiding/Protecting Utility

Point-Blank Software brings you the all-new version 2.0 of the popular

magazines, and now version 2.0 gives you all the functionality of the
original plus a new outstanding ease-of-use. And it is still absolutely

Version 2.0 is a major improvement over the original file hider. The
application can now unhide files, simply by dragging the file (from the
find file window) onto the Ghost 2.0 icon! This eliminates the need for
other file applications such as FileTyper. Plus, Ghost 2 now
automatically restores file types of hidden files when unhidden with the
Ghost 2 application. This makes using Ghost 2.0 and overall file
management much simpler and even safer than before, without the worry of
losing files on your hard disk or forgetting the file types/creators.
Another great feature of Ghost 2.0 is the ability to actually search and
locate all of the hidden files* on your computer! And just when you
thought it couldn't get any better, Ghost 2.0 is amazingly only 21 KB
large!** This means virtually no downloading time, so you can get right
to protecting your important files on your hard disk.

Ghost 2.0 is a file-hiding/protection utility. Use it to protect
important files on your hard disk. Simply drag any file or folder onto
the Ghost icon and it will disappear instantly. Version 2.0 allows you to
restore files without the aid of FileTyper! You also no longer have to
remember the file type of the protected file. Ghost is a very small and
very useful program if you have files on your hard disk that you want
kept safe.

* Hidden with the Ghost 2.0 application.
** When stuffed and binhexed. (Application is approx. 34 KB unstuffed.)

Feel free to contact me at pointb@kos.net with any
questions/comments/suggestions. In fact, I'd love to hear from you. Tell
me if you like Ghost 2 and what you use it for!

Subject: [*] Mac Libs

Mac Libs is a program for the Macintosh for studying grammar in an amusing
way. You can create story templates with "holes" that are filled in with
specific grammatical constructs (like nouns, verbs, etc.) or any arbitrary
categories (like names, colors, etc.). Words can be typed in at runtime or
chosen at random from a dictionary. Grammatical rules can be programmed in
a HyperCard-like language. For example, the "verb past tense" rule will
convert any verb to past tense. If the rules are correct and the
appropriate words are chosen, the generated story will be grammatically
correct, though frequently silly, and always amusing.

WhackIt! is a simple-in-concept, addictive game for the Mac, the whole Mac,
and nothing but the Mac. It is, to my knowledge, the first truly playable and
accurate port of the Whack-A-Mole arcade game to the home computer.

Most of you by now already know what I am talking about. You have a paddle,
there are a bunch of holes, and out of them pop little animals of some sort
(in this case, look sort of like moles...they're definitely rodents...). You
take the paddle and WHACK! them. For this you get points; if you wait too
long and they disappear back into their holes untouched, you lose.

This Mac version is faithful to the original, only you don't have to pay the
quarter. You can either control a virtual paddle with the mouse or simply use
the keyboard (or both, if you're some kind of wizard). It has funny sounds,
smooth animation, and works on just about any Mac. Also, contains 5 skill
levels to ensure a challenge for all ages and reflex speeds.

This version of WhackIt! is completely free, completely functional, and
guaranteed to continue challenging your scores to greater heights for a long
time. It's a short download, and contains a preview of later versions that
will feature the ability to WHACK! annoying people like Bill Gates, Barney,
and a mime. Try it; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

ZapResForks v1.0.1
=03=A9 1997 Richard Bannister

WARNING!

ZapResForks can irreversibly damage a file. The author disclaims all
responsibility for what you might do to your files using this program.
This program should only by used by people who have read this
documentation in full. Use this program at your own risk.

What does it do?

ZapResForks allows you to delete the resource fork from files quickly
and easily.

Erm, what's a resource fork?

MacOS files are made up of two parts - the resource fork and the data
fork. In general, the data fork is used mainly by documents (although
PowerPC native applications use it for code also). The resource fork is
where all the interface elements of applications are found, and the
680x0 code.

So why on earth would you want to delete a resource fork?

The main reason you might want to use a utility like this is when you
are putting together WWW pages in SimpleText. SimpleText is a handy
text-editor (you're probably using it right now to read this document),
but for some reason it always saves font/style information in a resource
fork, even if there is no style information for a document.

Now, the way files are stored on a disk means that one allocation block
is needed for the resource fork and one for the data fork. This can mean
that SimpleText files, less than 5K in actual size, can take up more
than 40K on disk on larger drives! Deleting the resource fork from
SimpleText files will delete any style information that is there -
saving one allocation block from the disk. On my 1.2Gb hard disk, that
amounts to 19K saved per file.

I ran into a similar problem with an SE (I bought for $25 betting I could
open the hard drive) The one I had was guarded with something else so this
may not work for you. The disk lock I surmised was built into the disk
partition which allowed the software to take control of the hard drive
before the system software cut in. Therefore I took a copy of SilverLining
and updated the drivers. In my case, the softare, (all 20 megs of it) was
still intact. Old, outdated and virtually useless, but still intact. Your
milage, however may vary so if there is anything on the hard drives you
might still want, let the buyer beware.

By the way, the other solution I employed was to replace the 20Meg hard
drive with an 80Meg that I removed some time ago from my main machine. I
suspect that lots of people have these things laying around and while they
are worthless in a PPC, they are quite adequate for an old SE.

I installed OS8 about two weeks ago on my 5300ce. I have 64 MB RAM. I
turned virtual memory off (because it took up too much of what little space
I had left on my hard drive) and I increased the disk cache to about 3 MB.
There is much less disk thrashing now than with the default settings after
installation. The machine is also noticeably faster than when I had OS
7.5.5.

PPP as installed by OS8 is not as easy or as fast as FreePPP was under
7.5.5. I may try re-installing FreePPP to see if I can improve that.

My Global Village Platinum Pro PC Card does not work reliably under OS8.
Global Village says it's Apple's problem and is related to modem scripts.
Sigh. I installed the software for my US Robotics 28.8 PC Card and it works
very well. Go figure.

My only problem is that some of my favourite extensions have not been
upgraded: RAM Doubler, Speed Doubler, etc.

QuickTime MPEG (1.0.1 is latest, on Apple's FTP servers) installs an
additional extension called Thread Manager (version 2.1.5) which belongs in

If you can't find Thread Manager on your drive with Find File, re-install
