Subject: [!] Info-Mac is moving! (and going offline for a short while)

Hi there,

Info-Mac is moving! That is the good news. Unfortunately, we have to do
this before we are completely ready. In order to concentrate on the move we
are going to shut down public access for two weeks starting this Wednesday
(12-Mar-97). During this brief hiatus, we will not accept uploads or
messages for the digest. Please don't send us anything until you see an
announcement about the completion of the move. You'll see a new digest with
any changes we in our mail addresses at that time. We're sorry about the
interuption in service!

Don't worry - we have the machine and it is already up - we just have to
move our scripts and procedures onto it. It will be hectic, but please bear
with us while we move.

Thanks for your patience!

The Info-Mac Moderators

p.s. what does this mean for you: no digests for a while. Sorry. As far as
getting at the mirrors, well, they will still be up, just not updating for
a while. Where you subscribe to the digest or download (from a mirror) will
not change. There will be new email addresses, but you won't be forced to
use them till the end of May. Tomorrow we will send out the last batch of
digests (including those 200 uploads)... I hope this will keep you happy
for a short while... Our backlog is less than 200 megs... that is the smallest
it has been in a long while! Yeah archivists!

Subject: [*] A Smaller GIF v1.01 (68k)

A Smaller GIF is a program that reduces the size of animated GIFs without
changing their appearance. The program can reduce animated GIFs as most GIF
utilities store all animations using a fixed technique; A Smaller GIF tries
several techniques and uses the one which minimizes file size. Saving the
results requires registration. Without registration, the program is a fully
functional animated GIF viewer, and may be used to view animated GIFs many
other utilities show incorrectly (many Macintosh GIF viewers don't handle
GIFs with local colour tables well).

Hi folks
Here is my old BabyLabyrinth game with a bunch of extra animations I
received from the net in the last years. As it still works fine on my
powermac I decided to post it again to thank all the people who designed
and sent me new funny animations and share them with more children.
It's a simple freeware b&w labyrinth for younger children. No scores, no
one to shoot, no blood. Just a bunch of nice characters walking in a
labyrinth collecting cakes, toys...
It shoud run on any mac from a classic, running system 6.04 or better (it
works fine even under 7.5.5). Enjoy

Subject: [*] Beat the Dragon 2.0-updated and revised full-color solitaire

Beat the Dragon 2.0 is an ORIGINAL solitaire card game for your Mac. It is
harder
to beat the dragon than it is to win at conventional solitaire, and offers the
strategic solitaire player more scope than the standard varieties of patience.
However, the rules are straightforward enough that children can play it as
well.

Version 2.0 has been completely redesigned for color macintoshes with 13" or
larger monitors. This means, there are slick new graphics and cards large
enough
that you won't go blind by playing. This game is fun, visually and aurally
interesting (for you kids out there, that means cool graphics and sounds:),
very
addictive, and can be very frusterating (that dragon's got some attitude
problems). Definitely a game for the die-hard patience player or just those who
like to keep one or two well-designed card games around.

All the instructions and ordering/registration material are enclosed in a
readme
file, but all the most relevant information (including rules etc.) can be found
under the apple menu in the game itself.

The game took a good deal of time to develop and I am asking for a shareware
registration fee of US $10 to (at least, partly) compensate me for my time and
effort. If you can't afford the fee, enjoy the game anyway. CD-ROM Publishers,
however, must take note of GRAPHICAindustria's new policies (see enclosed
ReadMe
file) with respect to them.

Finally, the game is now being supported by GRAPHICAindustria, a brand new,
Macintosh shareware company trying to get on thier feet. They are using 1997 to
test whether the Mac market is a viable game market. For more info on them and
upcoming games, take a look at thier nifty homepage: http://www.peak.sfu.ca/gi

Check there for updates and offers on this and other soon-to-be-released
Macintosh shareware games.

System Requirements: Any color Macintosh or PowerPC with 640x480 monitor
resolution or better.

Boxcars Casino is a collection of 6 casino games in one

built in.

Boxcars Casino is shareware, based strictly on an

GR-30 has a interesting and useful function "Arpeggiator". But to make
good arpeggio patterns, it need some practice.
Then, we developed a software "Arpeggio Editor" in order to make the
arpeggio patterns more easy. And later, it was expanded to "GR-30

Hotline is a client/server system for transfering files and conferencing with
other people on the Internet (or any TCP/IP network). You can download and
upload files, chat with other Hotline users, and leave news-style messages.

Being specifically designed for the MacOS, it has many advantages over the
traditional protocols such as FTP. For example, Hotline can resume file
transfers (even uploads) after an interruption. Also, files don't have to be
binhexed or macbinary'd, so they won't bloat in size. And when you get a
list of
files, the files don't just have generic document icons - they have mac
icons. An
application gets an application icon, a picture gets a picture icon, etc.

Hotline is shareware, which means you can try it before you buy it. Download

Subject: [*] Image Express Pro Demo

Image Express is a state-of-the-art image management database which has
significant opportunity for application in environments where there is a
need to manage, access, distribute, and/or market images in digital form.
In particular, Image Express has application in the Pre-Press, Advertising,
Graphic Design, and Publishing industries.
Users may search for images in a number of ways. Images returned by a
search may be viewed as an array of thumbnails or in larger preview
(full-screen) mode. Users may access and "download" high resolution image
files of any format for use in other applications. Remote clients may log
onto a central Image Express server (maintained by a service provider, for
example), search for, and download images.
Image Express is available in a number of versions, each designed to meet
the image management needs of a diverse range of organisations.

Type: Freely Distributed
Archive name: mac-ftp-list-423.hqx
category: communication, text

This is the latest {Mar 1, 1997} version this report and should replace
the previous version of mac-ftp-list.txt.

This is a update {Mar 1, 1997} to Mike Gleason and Bruce Grubb's Mac FTP
list. It lists over 200 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes), over
75 Mac web pages, contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs
decompress and decode which files and a section on how to use certain
decoded files. This archive contains both the text and html versions.

Please note that the html part is actually four crosslinked files:
mac-ftp-list.html, ftp-list.html, www-section.html, and site-notes.html
that require HTML Browser such as Lynx, Mosaic or NetScape to view.

Must be in a monospaced font to be readable; Courier 10pt is recommended,
though Monaco 9pt or a PC equivalent can be used instead. Needs StuffIt
Expander or equivalent {unsitins.exe} to decompress.

it works upon files, folders, and disks.
It's a fat binary, written in C/C++, and compiled with CodeWarrior 10.

HappiWare-if you like it, remember to smile. :-)

					How to use:

* Just drop files, folders and disks on the MacDater finder-icon.
					      OR ...
* Start MacDater & drop files, folders and disks on its splash-screen.
					      OR ...
* Start MacDater & select a file with the standard Open file dialog.

The default date-setting method can be set in the preferences dialog, but
by holding down either the Option key or the Command key when dropping
files on MacDater, the user can switch methods temporarily.

Finally, MacDater stores its preferences inside itself-which means that you
can simultaneously avail yourself of two or more copies with differing
settings.

Subject: [*] SoundApp 2.2.3 - sound playback and conversion utility

I'm happy to announce the availability of SoundApp 2.2.3. SoundApp is the
premiere sound playback and conversion utility for the Macintosh. It is
suitable for use as a sound-playing helper application with any of the
popular WWW browsers, in addition to managing a collection of favorite
sound samples and stand-alone usage. SoundApp remains freeware, so you
may use it at no cost. Information regarding licensing the conversion
and playback routines can be found in the internal "About SoundApp..."
documentation.

SoundApp 2.2.3 fixed a few problems with 2.2.2:

* SoundApp no longer gets confused if the Controls Palette is closed while
playing a file from a Play List,
* Made another attempt to allow SoundApp to work without a PowerPC-native
  AppleScript,
* Corrected two AppleScript dictionary problems (one which prevented conversion
to a specific format type and another which prevented saving a Play List to
  a specified file),
* If SoundApp is in the midst of playing some sounds and a folder is
dropped onto
SoundApp, the sound files contained therein will now be added to the playback
  queue,
* Cleaned up internal memory management and fixed some issues with drag and
drop
  in Play Lists,
* Significantly sped up the sorting of Play Lists.

SoundApp requires the following:

* At least a 68020 or PowerPC-based Macintosh (sorry 68000 users!),
* System 7.0 or greater, and
* Sound Manager 3.1 or greater (3.1 can be obtained from Apple, 3.2
is part of System 7.5.3 or greater and 3.2 is part of QuickTime 2.5).

In addition, the following optional items are recommended:

* QuickTime 2.0 or greater for QuickTime support (2.5 preferred),
* The Drag Manager for drag and drop use in the Play Lists (part of
  System 7.5 and later),
* A PowerPC-based Macintosh for MPEG support and better performance.

Please note that I have no plans to support System 6.0.x, 68000-based Macs,
MPEG on 680x0-based Macs or earlier versions of the Sound Manager. Sorry..

forces in the members using color intensities to denote force values.
This new version is for PPC macs only.
It will run on any PowerMac with the QuickTime extension installed to be
able to produce movies of a car traveling over the truss.

New in version 6.0

* PowerPC native version only.
* The application was rewritten in C++ using Symantec C++ visual
architecture. Segments of the code did not fit in the 32K segment limit
to produce a non PPC version. Sorry.
* Balloon help is enabled.
* Shortcut buttons and the color scale reside on floating pallets.
* Truss colors as well as background and foreground colors can be
selected by the user.
* Pattern display has been disabled. Only colors are available.
* The animation of the car traveling over the truss is done in a
separate window.
* The entire truss can be moved with the mouse.
* Applied nodal forces can be assigned by double-clicking a node..
* The full version can be unlocked with a serial number instead of
waiting for a full version.
* Some menu items were rearranged, and some were dropped altogether.
* When printing, the truss will be centered and resized to fit on one
page.
* The console window was dropped. The forces text can be exported to a
file when needed.
* Automatic snap to grid functionality has been added.
* Method of sections has been dropped since the truss is analyzed
automatically. Only the method of joints will be used to display joint
and/or supports free body diagrams.

The demo version is fully operational for 4 node trusses, and can build but
cannot solve trusses with higher number of joints.

Registered users of version 5.x can get a free upgrade by sending an

unlock this demo.

My daughter needs a larger hard drive for her Powerbook 145B, which now
contains only an 80 Meg HD. They seem to be rather hard to get hold of.
Does anyone know of any sources?

1. Does anyone know the highest version number associated with Word 5 for
the Mac?

2. Quite some time ago there was a message in info-mac about some firm
located (I believe) in the Seattle area that sold used (Mac?) software
including even unopened shrink-wrapped programs. I have lost the reference.
If anyone knows of this or similar organizations and could supply me with
the name, address, telephone no. and or e-mail or web address, I'd sure
appreciate it.

GifBuilder 0.5 by Yves Piguet is a fine program for animated GIFs.
GifBuilder permits loops, transitions, invisible color, ...

When I try to open a new dowloaded version of eudora pro demo (302) I find
it is 'expired' already.

I tried a previous demo late last year, and I think the date in the info
box for the new demo matches that time.

I currently use eudora lite (which I tried removing before opening the 302
demo).

Any ideas.

Subject: Even more Pb100 questions!

I have a problem of waking up my PowerBook 100 from hard drive sleep.
If the hard drive has gone to rest, almost every application i have
crashes when i do something that requires reading from the hard drive.
This is especially true for the finder.

As an amateur programmer i have the following idea of what is going on:
when an application sends a request to the resource manager for a
resource while the hard drive isn't spinning, the resource manager sends
back an error code: resource not found (or similar) and if the
application isn't prepared to handle such a situation (which it should
be) it crashes.

Two questions:

1. Is this a software bug that can be cured? I tried system 7.1.1, 7.5,
7.5.3 and 7.5.5 with the same result.

2. Or, are there any utilities available that are able to wake up a
sleeping hard drive gently ( E.g. by asking for some disc-content but
without crashing if it isnt getting it)?

Other suggestions, please?

The message you see after starting up about having GX fonts on a non-GX
system is actually a message coming from Adobe's Type Manager. When you
install ATM or Acrobat the installer determines whether or not GX is
installed and active. If it is, it places the substitution fonts for ATM
in one suitcase. These are PostScript Type 1 fonts which normally come as
a font file (the PostScript description of the font) and a suitcase file
where the bitmap fonts are stored.
Now, when you installed GX, the GX installer did the same with your
PostScript fonts that where already on your system and created a backup
folder with the original files. This is the "*Archived Type 1 Fonts"
folder.
If you don't want to use GX anymore, remove it from your system,
re-install ATM and/or Acrobat, and finally drag all the fonts from the
"*Archived Type 1 Fonts" folder to the regular fonts folder and you're
all set.
The "Fonts (Disabled), Archived TT Fonts" have nothing to do with GX
installation or ATM/Acrobat installation, but rather with a font
management utillity. If these folders contain GX-ified Type 1 fonts of
which you don't have a back-up, you have lost them.
As for TrueType fonts "classic" QuickDraw is happy with GX TT fonts, so
you will be able to use Hoefler and Skia, but you will not be able to use
the special GX features of those fonts.

Excellent info on everything GX:

I hope this shows you what to do.

...right. If I remember correctly, Mac+ can only take max. of 4MB RAM, so
if you try on multi-tasking, better stay on with os6x, 7.0.1 will take over
1MB of your mem.

You need to have the system extension "Clipping Extension" installed (along
with the Drag Manager, which or may not be included in the system software,
depending on your version). Then you can double-click it in the Finder to
view it and copy it. You cannot modify it.

Alternatively (or in addition), there is a utility on Info-Mac called
"Finder Note" (I think) that lets you do a bit more with the clippings.

> How do I create graphics of this format?

Drag something (text, picture) from a draggable application to the Finder;
it will automatically create a clipping file.

> What are the propoerties of this format? Bitmapped 72 dpi?

I believe it is PICT format, the standard Mac graphics format.

> I guess objects of this format cannot be read on other platforms than
> Macintosh?

You guess correctly. You'll need to convert it to something more common.

The Mac Plus should be able to use everything up to 7.5.5.
