Cone of Silence 1.0b1
Abstract:
Cone of Silence is an application that blocks key capture programs while
it is running. There are many utilities out there that save all key
strokes to a file. The purpose of these programs (usually) is to save
anything you have been typing in case of a system crash. The downside
is, malicious users install them on other peoples machines (public labs,
etc.) and gather information like passwords to network services. This is
a MAJOR security issue.
Cone of Silence can be used to ease some of the fears associated with
using public access machines. While I can not claim that this program
guarantees security in all cases, it does do a good job with every
method of key capturing I have found. I carry Cone of Silence around
myself, whenever I must use a potentially insecure machine.
This is the first public beta release - I have done extensive testing on
my system - but not on too many other different systems.
Requirements
A MacOS compatible computer System 7 or greater ADB Keyboard (Apple or
equivalent) - If there is enough interest I may do a version for older
non-ADB keyboards (Mac Plus etc.)
Shareware: $10 - Site License $200 ($100 for educational institutions)
Cone of Silence may be distributed on shareware collections.

Jeremy's Control Strip Modules is a package of Control Strip Modules,
designed to work with Apple's Control Strip software. The modules are:
* Jeremy's CPU speed CSM - Displays current clock speed in MHz, or
indicates relative full/reduced clock speed with tortoise/hare icons. You
can also select the clock speed after you restart.
* Jeremy's Battery CSM - Replaces Apple's Battery Monitor module, but
displays more battery information in a smaller area! Also displays hard
drive status, modem status and remaining battery time.
* Jeremy's Clock CSM - Displays the current time. Via a popup menu, you
can customize the appearance of the display.
* Jeremy's Sound Volume CSM - A direct replacement for the Sound Volume
module provided by Apple. The icon shows the current volume setting in
both numeric and pictoral form, so you don't need to bring up the menu to
determine the current volume.
* Jeremy's Sleep CSM - A direct replacement for the Sleep Now module
provided by Apple. Via the popup menu, you can select whether or not to
bypass the dialog that appears when AppleTalk is active.
* Jeremy's Battery Time CSM - Displays Apple's remaining battery time on
PowerBooks that are capable of it. It can also "learn" the battery life on
any model of PowerBook, or display the elapsed battery time.
* Jeremy's Temperature CSM - Displays the internal temperature of a
PowerBook Duo or PowerBook 500 series.
* Jeremy's Application CSM - Displays a count of currently running
applications and DA's. Also has popup menu that lets you select foreground
application.
* Jeremy's AppleTalk CSM - Replaces Apple's AppleTalk CSM, but displays
more information.
* Jeremy's EnergyStrip CSM - Replaces the PowerBook or Energy Saver
Control Panel, and lets you adjust power conservation settings from the
Control Strip.
* Jeremy's Power Countdown CSM - Shows how much time remains before power
conservation features activate.
Release 1.7.0 introduces the Power Countdown CSM.

Subject: [*] Jerry's Cursors II
Hi, Folks this is a collection of Animated cursors I've done over the
past few years. This is the best collection of color cursors of which
I'm aware. Some of these cursors represent the finest animation possible
in 16X16 pixels.
I've done cursors rather than Zipples for two reasons: 1) "Zipples"
requires a shareware fee. "CursorAnimator" does not. 2) Cursors are
useful. Zipples are not.
These are all in CursorAnimator files, and can easily be used with that
Control Panel, which you can find most places where you can find Mac
Shareware. Of course if you're handy with ResEdit, you can find lots of
other ways to use them. Most cursors contain both black and white and
color versions.
These cursors are freeware for personal use. If you'd like to use any of
them in a commercial product, please contact me for permission first.

Tidy It Up ! attempts to solve the ever growing problem of System Folder
clutter.
This version includes settings for System 7.6 !
It does so in a "cosmetic" way, i.e. by regrouping the icons according
to a set of categories. The program is very safe to use, since it
doesn't patch anything and ultimately accomplishes automatically and
painlessly what you could very well do manually if you are willing to
spend the required time and effort.
Files are sorted alphabetically by name in each category. A file's
category is determined by its Type, Creator and name. Tidy It Up !
creates one file per category, just to act as a label for it on the left
hand side of the window. Each category name is preceded by a special
token to allow easy grouping of categories when viewing them by name.

Typical is a quick and simple utility that lets you alter file and
creator types. First, you make copies of the tiny (12k!) Typical
application and rename them to the type/creator combos you want (i.e.
ttro-ttxt for TeachText Read-Only, PICT-BABL for Pict files from
Debabelizer, etc.). Then, you just drag the file(s) for conversion onto
the appropriate Typical icon! You can do single files, multiple files,
or convert a whole folder at once by dragging and dropping. Typical also
has an undo feature to let you undo your alterations if you make a
mistake. Runs on any Mac with System 7.5 or later. Shareware, but no

Announcing the release of Xtension Overload 2.0 (Formerly known as
Extension Overload) !
Xtension Overload reviews 471 extensions and 163 control panels that are
commonly found in the Extensions Folder & Control Panel Folder on every
Mac. For those who do not know much about extensions & Control Panel,
this program gives you some insight so you can decide which ones are
necessary for your computer and which are not.
Extensions & Control Panels perform a number of activities on your Mac
to make it more functional. However, some Extensions & Control Panels
will do NOTHING but EAT UP MEMORY and it is sometimes difficult to know
how much memory an extension will use (25K ? 105K ? 88K ? 800K ? .... )
because Extensions & Control Panels memory usage is volatile: They
increase their memory when they are in use and shrink back when they are
not.
An Extension & Control Panel may take up only a little DISK SPACE,
(maybe 13k) or as high as 1 MB or more. Worse, BUGS in an Extension &
Control Panel can also crash and SLOW DOWN your computer.
The best way of dealing with problematic Extensions & Control Panels is
to drag them into the trash and dispose of them. But how do you know
which ones are helping and which are hindering your machine's
performance? Enter Xtension Overload, a helpful database that provides
valuable information at your fingertips about some of the more common
extensions you may have on your machine. It can help you if you are
unsure of what a particular Extensions or Control Panels is for or what
it does, and will help you decide whether you want it on your machine or
not. Apple provides many Extensions & Control Panels that you don't
always need as an option and service to the customer. For example, if
your machine is not on a network, then you may not want the Network
Extension installed on your machine. If you've disposed of the extension
and connect to a local network at a later date, you can always recover
that extension from the original system disk.

Subject: (Q) how to tighten PB520 hinge?
I remember seeing a posting a while ago about a PB520/540 hinge snapping
because it came loose. I have a PB520 with a loose lid and I am looking
for directions on how to tighten it, but have not been able to find that
previous posting. (FYI: I receive this digest via email and do not have
easy access to the world wide web.)
If someone could describe the operation in a few simple steps, I'd really
appreciate it. I could probably take the whole thing apart to figure it
out, but would rather not disturb the parts that are not broken. I have
a torx wrench that opens the PB520 case. Are any other tools needed?
If the hinge is tightened by tightening the two screws under the support
"feet" in the back, then the hinge on my PB must be loose in a different
way, because those screws are already tight...

like this, even though they understand that something like this aids to
progress in the OS. Let's face it, it was sneaky. "
*I* knew about the change! I think it was discussed in the Mac media
and by Apple. Any time you upgrade your OS you should check to see if
it supports your hardware - that's just computer common sense in my
opinion. It certainly was not a "sneaky" change. I can't comment on
Apple's phone support since I have never needed to use it.
