TidBITS#552/23-Oct-00

  Microsoft Word is arguably the most dominant business application
  on the Mac, so Contributing Editor Matt Neuburg examines Word 2001
  in depth to see if Word's first major update in years is
  worthwhile. We also review Apple's forays into Unix operating
  systems, and note Apple posting a $170 million profit and MCF
  Software taking over ListSTAR from 4D. Releases this week include
  Nisus Writer 6.0, icWord 1.1, and new handhelds from Handspring.

Subject: [*] MoreFinderPrefs 1.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the MoreFinderPrefs package.

MoreFinderPrefs - there is an alert that appears in the finder when you
do something "dangerous". It asks you whether you really want to do the
thing you've tried to do or not. Most often, the answer to the finder's
question is "Yes, $#@%!" MoreFinderPrefs detects the finder asking you
this question and automatically answers for you. MoreFinderPrefs works
by matching the string that would have been displayed to the user
(that's you!).

Version 1.1 improves compatibility with Mac OS 9.0.X

This is a Sherlock Plugin for Mac OS 8.5 and later that searches the Open
Directory
(http://dmoz.org/).

This directory is known for its highly relevamt search results.

I suggest that you put this file in the same directory as the other
Sherlock Plugins. This seems to be the comm directory.

This plugin is free.
It will automatically update itself if a new version is released.

-H.P.

Subject: [*] UnCoverIt 1.3.1

What is UnCoverIt?

UnCoverIt is a shareware application that automatically generates labels
for CD-Roms, Zip-Disk and SuperDisks. Since version 1.3.1 UnCoverIt
supports AudioCDs, too. Unlike other label printing applications you don't
have to enter the name of the files on your disk manually. UnCoverIt
places icons and file names automatically at the right place and the right
size.

Supported disk types:

*	CD-ROMs
*	Audio CDs
*	Iomega Zip Disks
*	SuperDisks
*	MO Disks
*	Iomega JAZ Disks
*	ORB Disks

Pricing

The single user license is $10.
A Site License costs $50 and covers all locations for your organization
within a 160 kilometer radius of your site (100 miles). One big advantage
of a Site License is that you do not need to keep track of how many people
at your site are using the software.
A World-Wide License costs $500 and it covers all locations for your
organization on the planet earth.

1.3.1 (2000-10-17)
*	added ORB cover
*	rotation direction of side panes can be changed now
*	imports audio track names from the "CD Remote Programs" file used
        by AppleCD Audio Player
*	multi-column support for audio covers
*	added ability to turn index and length code drawing on and off for
        Audio Covers

1.3 (2000-07-20)
*	adds support for Audio-CDs
*	adds support for background pictures
*	adds several new cover formats (SuperDisk, MO-Disks, JAZ)
*	added a manual (Acrobat PDF file)

Subject: Ethernet Working on UMAX S900?

I'm having some trouble getting our new Earthlink DSL connection working on
my UMAX S900. Among other things, one possible problem is that the on-board
ethernet (which I have never used) may not be functional. The reason I think
this is a possiblility is that if I go to the TCP/IP control panel and look
under "Options", the hardware address is listed as <not applicable>. I'm
running OS 8.1.

Any ideas out there as to how to confirm whether the ethernet "card" is
working or not?

Control Panels -> Appearance

It's under the "Fonts" tab.

This may not be the most appropriate forum, but I'd appreciate advice
about this problem:

Copying certain files (or their duplicates) from 100MB Zip to Mac desktop
(or HD folder) crashes Mac with error message: "Finder" Device Manager
Error.

Details: PM7300 and 7600 both running OS 8.1. Error occurs with extensions
off as well as on. Iomega driver updated this week and installation of new
one confirmed. No problems with reading/writing other data, including
large TIFF files, to and from Zip. Iomega Tools reports Zip disk OK.
Norton reports Zip and HD OK.

Example files:

One that causes the crash:

Apple download (current), MRJ Libraries:MRJClasses:MRJClasses.zip (7.4 MB)

One from same folder that does NOT cause the crash:

Apple download (current), MRJ Libraries:MRJClasses:JDKClasses.zip (1.6 MB)

This problem ws discovered whilst attempting to update my Mac Runtime for
Java. Are these .zip files actually needed?

Subject: Switching Platforms

I would like to switch from my old Windows based computer to a new
Macintosh G4. Where can I find information on how to accomplish the
software and hardware conversion/switch? Basically I need to understand
how to load my Windows data (Word, Excel, e-mail, photo,
bookmarks/favorites, etc., etc.) onto a Macintosh. There seem to be
formidable software and hardware difficulties. Is there a place where I
can find out how to do this?

I am ready to convert, but how?

Subject: Virtual PC and USB Deskjet / Mouse

I am using Virtal PC 3.03 on a G4.

I have an HP DeskJet 970cxi USB, an HP DeskJet 1220 USB and a MS
Intellimouse Explorer USB that I use with my Mac.

I cannot get Virtual PC (Windows '98) to print on these printers or
use the scroll wheel of the mouse. I used the Epson LQ2500 print
driver, as instructed.

The hardware all appears in the Preferences menu, but I am not asked
for the drivers and I cannot print (or scroll) whether they are
checked or not.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!
