Subject: [*] AVI-to-QT Kit 1.1

Attached is the latest revision of AVI-to-QT Kit. I added a bit more
documentation and added 'vers' ID 2 resources to unify the kit and allow
Extensions Manager 4.0 to group the codecs, I also made sure to get the
latest codecs from Intel.

Note that any AVIs that use the Indeo Video Interactive(a.k.a. Indeo
4.x) codec cannot be played on a Mac at all, as Intel has not yet
released such codecs for the Mac.

P.S. No, I do not know of a way to convert a QuickTime movie to AVI
format, tell your PC using friends to get QuickTime for Windows ;)

CombiNumerals is a "dingbat" font that lets you create any circled number
between 0 and 99 in either solid or hollow circles. You can even create
circled numbers with leading zeros. Very useful for people creating
documentation, Web graphics and instructional material, for example. It's
available in both TrueType and Type 1 formats. Freeware.

Subject: [*] Daleks ET 1.0

This is a simple implementation of Daleks, a old game first written (as far
as I know) by John and Walter Wu (although I didn't use any of their source
code). You are being chased around by very stupid robots who want to kill
you for some strange reason. (You probably forgot to back up their memory
cores last night, didn't you? How inconsiderate!) Fortunately, these
robots are complete idiots. They always head straight for you, and with a
little strategy, you can cause them to crash into each other, turning
expenisive machinery into piles of rubble. (always a good time!)
...
Version 2.0 should also include sound and a little animation, maybe the AI
if I've gotten anywhere with that...
...
Requirements:
I think anything with a 640x480 screen will do fine, but I could be wrong.
Just try it and find out.

Freeware or Shareware:
If you've ever written any shareware or freeware software for the Mac
community, this is free. I've used a lot of shareware that I never paid
for (I'm an unemployed high school Junior, what do you expect?), so this is
the best payback I can muster for now. (along with any other software I
write in the near future)
However, if you've never contributed anything to the Mac community, and
this is your most favorite game in the whole world, just give me something
in return. A buck or two would be really cool, but I'll take whatever you
think it's worth (email a really funny joke or some pick up lines maybe?)

Subject: [*] Drill v1.2

Drill 1.2
Drill is a simple and efficient freeware program to drill list of
words, as all highschool students have to do to learn a foreign
language.

Enter the words you want to learn and their translations, and exercise
until you know them. It should be pretty obvious how to use the program,
the only skill required (or to be developed) is some typing experience
.... The order in which the words are asked has been optimized to learn
them as fast as possible. Using checkboxes you may restrict Drill to ask
only certain words, for example only words you are having problems with.

Version 1.2 contains a small bug fix and provides Import and Export
options
using tab delimited text files. Please note that these new features are
largely untested, comments are welcome.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think of it or which improvements you
would like. I will try to fix any bug which comes to my attention!

Permission granted to include Drill on a Info Mac CD-ROM.

Eldacur Anteak=81 is a Kaleidoscope 1.5 color scheme. If you don't have
Kaleidoscope 1.5, it won't do you much good.

Anteak is the latest incarnation of a color scheme that I have used for

This is the Japanese version of the Find In Files package.

Find In Files is a Mac shareware application that searches a set of
files (or all files) for some text. Available for 68K and PPC.
Why would you use Find In Files? Here's an example. Suppose you have
100's of Microsoft Word files, and one or more of them has some
information you need. You could open every one of the files and search
them by hand, or use Find In Files to search for you. Simply enter some
key words, enter the creator and file types (or click the Select File
button, and open any file to get the creator and file type), enter the
folder where the search should begin, and click on Search. Find In Files
returns with a list of text snippets and the files that contain the text
snippets.

Subject: [*] Frosty 2.0 Photoshop 3 Plugin

Frosty is an image manipulator. It takes the selected area and does an
algorithm on it and produces a snow like effect on the image. The amount of
snow can vary according to the intensity you select. You can choose between
1 and 99 percent. The effects can be different according to the type of
graphic you are applying the filter to. On simple pictures Frosty acts like
a 'find lines' filter, adding frost along the edges. On more complex
graphics, Frosty adds the 'snow' more evenly. In a sense, think of it as
this: the snow goes into the 'pits' of the image.

The 'snow' color is the current background color you currently have selected.

This is a Adobe Photoshop version 5.0 filter. That is, it works with all
programs that use Photoshop plug-ins compatible with version 3.0 of
Photoshop and higher. The filter has native code for both 680x0 and PowerPC
based Macintoshes. I don't have a 680x0 Mac anymore so I cannot test it but
it is based on the same code. If there are any problems, please let me know.

What's different since 1.0 (a.k.a. New Features)
   * Frosty is now a version 5 Photoshop filter
   * Previews in the dialog box
   * Numbers based on percent, not levels
   * Fat binary, supports PowerPC and 680x0
   * Faster algorithm
   * Works if you have multiple layers in your document
   * Placed in the 'Noise' menu now instead of 'Stylize'
   * Better documentation with example!

Subject: [*] GIF Blast 3.0

This is GIF Blast version 3.0. GIF Blast is a lossless GIF compressor.
It is shareware written by Eric Toonen.

Now with version 3.0 it is finally accelerated for PowerPC!

GIF Blast is a compressor designed especially for GIF files. The usual file
compressors do not work on GIF files; GIF Blast does. Unlike JPEG
compression, GIF Blast does not loose image quality!

System requirements:
- Mac OS 7.0 or later,
- 68020 processor or better. (PPC native)
- 400 Kb of free memory.

Version 3.0 brings quite some changes from 2.0.9:
- Most notably, it is now PowerPC native, making it about three times
  faster on PowerMacs.
- It now requires MacOS version 7 or higher so if you use MacOS 6.0.x
stick with 2.0.9 until you migrate.
- The file handling routines are rewritten, fixing a bug in the previous
versions with MacOS 7.5 and later that didn't allow you to open multiple
files while conversion was already started.
- The user-interface has been somewhat modernized.
- GIF Blast now correctly responds to Shutdown/Restart events in the
  Finder.

Please open the About Box or read the accompanying 'Readme' file for more
information.

Subject: [*] Heroes of the Black Tower

The attached file contains Heroes of the Black Tower - a game scenario for
Sword Dream 3D version 2.1. This is the final version, and replaces the
public beta we uploaded on the Net in mid May '97.

Sword Dream 3D is a fantasy adventure gaming system. Old role playing games
had you play over a boring 2D map. In Sword Dream 3D, your surroundings are
in three-D (just like in Marathon=81, Doom=81 or Descent=81). Still, this=
 isn't a
shoot-em-up videogame: it's a think-first, act-later game.

And it's fun for days, not minutes: Dream 3D accepts plug-in adventure
games, or "scenarios". Anybody can create a 3D scenario using the free
tools we are providing, which allow anyone to create new monsters, spell,
objects, buildings, traps, riddles, characters, music and more.

Subject: [*] Pattern Manager 1.5

With the myriad of other desktop pattern installers out there, why
another desktop pattern manager? Simple: none of them had the features
that I wanted.

Pattern Manager-displays patterns with their names in a
user-sizable grid, installs patterns into the System File, and sets the
utilities pattern (which other desktop pattern installers don't do). It
fully supports drag and drop between files, the Scrapbook, the Finder,
and any other program that supports drag and drop. It has the best PICT
importer available, and, remarkable for a desktop pattern manager, it
has resizeable windows. It also has a nifty pattern information window
and can change the background pattern periodically.

New in version 1.5:

Squishy Pack is a set of four Kaleidoscope color schemes, and three
Desktop Pattern clippings to enhance your Mac OS windows and desktop.
The four color schemes are variations of the original Squishy, and were
created in response to requests from some people who found the
original=92s yellow text and highlights a bit too bright.

The four variants are:

Squishy Yellow which uses the original yellow text and highlights.

Squishy White which uses white text and highlights.

Squishy Gray which uses light gray text and highlights.

Squishy Squash which uses pale yellow text and highlights.

To use the Kaleidoscope color schemes, you must have the Kaleidoscope
1.5 (or greater) control panel installed (this color scheme will not
work with Kaleidoscope 1.0). Kaleidoscope is shareware by Greg

In the past couple of days, I've been rebooting my system with different
combinations of system files activated. Sometimes when my Zip drive was
connected to the SCSI port (Zip drive either on or off), the system sounded
like it was booting up, but my screen would not come on. In these
situations, only disconnecting the Zip drive from the SCSI port would allow
a full bootup. And sometimes everything worked right. I have not been able
to identify the particular circumstances that lead to the problem.

Has anyone else had the problem of their Zip drive preventing the
AppleVision monitor from coming on? Did you figure out the particular cause?

Thanks for any insight that can be provided!

Hi all!

I don't know if this is really the best forum for this problem (so if
anyone has a better idea where to post this kind of question I'm more
than open to suggestion), but:

I have a textbox on a spreadsheet (tho this problem seems to be valid
for cells as well) and I need to (and can) enter more than 255
characters into it manually. The problem comes in writing a macro to
manipulate this text. Whatever I do (Len, Textboxes(1).Text,
Textboxes(1).Characters(start,stop), etc.), I seem to hit a 255
character limit even though I've actually typed in more than 255
characters into the textbox.

Anyone have any idea how to get around this limitation in Excel 5.0 (or
7.0 on Windoze)?

Please reply to me directly as I'm not reading the digests as
religiously as I should...

MUCH Thanks and Gratitude in Advance...

Dear Digest posters,
Anybody tried all the Kaleidoscope themes? With all the themes out there
isn't it time the people who posted themes gave a fuller description of the
theme? Or if somebody could try all the themes and make a Kaleidoscope
themes FAQ? I thought maybe something like this could be made:

theme name - aaron
icons - 3d icons in the closed light blue color
status bar color - can be changed to any you want
radio buttons - are indicated by a black checkbox
font - use Epsi Sans font
scrollbars - 3d with buttons using Color control panel's color.
window titles - gray in Copland style

etc....
It would be interesting in learning what makes each theme unique, and thus
retrieving the theme wouldn't be a waste of time, because then one can
decide whether or not one likes the theme idea before they get it.

Just saying "please post such and such a theme" doesn't tell the potential
theme user anything about it.

IMHO.

Subject: Pointer Freezes - Problem Solved

I would like to thank all of you who offered suggestions to help
me with my pointer freezing problem. It is solved now, so I will
explain what I did that worked.

Lee Clawson and others advised that I:
1. Trash the Finder Pref's file.
2. Take everything out of the Start-Up Folder.

I did those things and they worked. However, it turned out that I had
two problems and didn't realize it. I don't know if they were caused by
the same source. Anyway, after I was able to start up without pointer
freezes, I still had the problem of crashes when I tried to open files
that were sent to me as attachments. When they crashed my pointer would
freeze. No window with a "Bomb" appeared, the pointer simply froze.
Sometimes the pointer would still move, but I couldn't do anything with
it, and none of my keyboard keys would function. The senders of those
attachments used MS Word on a PC with Windows 95; I use MS Word
ver. 6.0.1 on a Mac with System 7.5. Crashes seemed to occur during the
conversion process. Incidentally, I should have mentioned earlier that I
am using a Power Mac 6100/66 with 12 MB of RAM and RAM Doubler 2.

That was the first indication I had of this problem. Then I found out
that if I tried to write in a newly created MS Word file the same thing
would happen. Anyway, after carefully eliminating groups of extensions
I narrowed it down to one - CopyPaste 3.3. But eliminating and testing
extensions didn't work the first times I tried it. It worked only after
I cleared up my startup problem. I didn't believe CopyPaste was the
cause since I didn't have any difficulty with it with all my other
programs, including my email files; I use Eudora Pro.

So now, I am wondering if I should acquire another copy of CopyPaste 3.3
and try to use it, or look for something else. It worked for a month or
more with no difficulty, and the earlier versions worked well, so I am
thinking that the copy I had became corrupted somehow. I really like
CopyPaste and used it a lot. Perhaps an earlier version would be OK, not
ver. 3.3. I wonder if anyone else has had the same experience.

During the course of my trials I encountered an advertisement for
TechTools and downloaded their demo. This is not a request, but I hope
to read comments on Info-Mac about how well TechTools Pro performs. If
it works as well as the advertisement says it does it might have helped
me diagnose and solve both of my problems much sooner.

Lastly, if someone (Adam or Tonya Engst?) wants to write a chapter about
pointer freezes and would like to know what I have learned from all of
you I might be a useful source.

Thanks again,

Aloha,

Ed Cesar

The peculiar behavioral abberation:

The CD-ROM works perfectly when I start my Mac from hard drive #2.
When I start from drive #1, it also works great except for one
annoying bug - it won't eject automatically; that is, after pressing
command-Y, the icon disappears but to eject the disk, I need to press
the eject button. With the other startup drive, it is auto"magic"ally
spit out.

I have performed the usual voodoo of throwing away the NEC prefs and

Subject: web page management

Dear Digest readers,
I've been looking for a web page management software that does the
following:

1. scan a folder for .html files, and scans the contents of the html
files for
links to ftp://, gopher://, telnet://, and http:// sites.
2. Automatically try to visit each link in the folder's .html files,
and report back which links are dead, which ones auto-forward to other
sites, and the URLs they auto-forward to.

So far the only utilities available at the archives I am aware of that
do
this will only check http:// sites. I like the style of Big Brother
which makes an .html file with a table of each of the links that didn't
succeed, and allows you to organize the links alphabetically. If
someone could make something that does this for all URL types, I'd be
happy to pay for such a utility.

So does anybody know of a shareware demo of such a utility on the web?
Thank you.
