Subject: [*] Control Freak 1.1

Control Freak 1.1 - This PPC application allows the User to make
adjustments to the display settings of an Apple Video input system. They
are then saved so that they may be quickly called up at a later time.
Why would you need an app like 'Control Freak'? The "Apple Video Player"
application does not have a 'Hue' control (as of this writing) and this
was the initial reason for creating it. Additionally, other video
related applications little or no adjustment of the video input signal.
In some apps, there is not offered control over the full range of some
parameters. Also, the selector for whether the video input is from a
realtime video source such as the video output of a tuner versus the
playback of a video tape from a VCR is not always supported in all apps.
If this is not set properly, the image can be considered completely
unviewable. Hardware Support Limitations: This app only works with Apple
Macintosh PowerPC models: 7500, 7600, 8500, and 8600.

The Comp.Sys.Mac.Programmer Digest is moderated by Mark Aiken
(marka@ee.mcgill.ca).

The digest is a collection of article threads from the internet
newsgroups comp.sys.mac.programmer.help, csmp.tools, csmp.misc and
csmp.games. It is designed for people who read news semi-regularly and
want an archive of the discussions. If you don't know what a
newsgroup is, you probably don't have access to it. Ask your systems
administrator(s) for details. If you don't have access to news, you
may still be able to post messages to the group by using a mail server
like anon.penet.fi (mail help@anon.penet.fi for more information).

Each issue of the digest contains one or more sets of articles (called
threads), with each set corresponding to a 'discussion' of a particular
subject. The articles are not edited; all articles included in this digest
are in their original posted form (as received by our news server at
ee.mcgill.ca). Article threads are not added to the digest until the last
article added to the thread is at least two weeks old (this is to ensure that
the thread is dead before adding it to the digest). Article threads that
consist of only one message are generally not included in the digest.

The digests can be obtained by email, ftp or through the World Wide Web.

If you want to receive the digest by mail, send email to
majordomo@ee.mcgill.ca with no subject and one of the following commands

Subject: [*] DocJet 1.3.0; Launcher utility.

DocJet is a wonderful utility for opening any file type, folders, disks.
You can instruct DocJet to use alternative applications to open each
file type. You can also link any given application to a choosed key:
when you open items, while holding down that key, all your items are
opened by the linked application. Last but not least, DocJet can
directly open any file type, including cdevs, desk accessories, disks,
folders, simply by typing a key. You can, naturally, leave DocJet open
and act directly by means of its buttons or by using the Drag Manager,
but it's very cool when used on the fly: it performs its action then
quits itself automatically. Besides, DocJet is very very easy to
configure. At last, you can remove any alias from your desktop and leave
there DocJet only... It's Internet Config aware and requires at least
System 7 to run.

The DocJet 1.3.0 package contains both 68K and PowerPC versions.

formats. Rewritten the whole code, reducing application size and improved
its efficiency. Better keys tracking. Improved list window look. Internet
Config aware. Improved registration form. Improved registration procedure.
Removed window zooming. Removed custom controls. Removed User's Manual
window. Removed Printing Menus. Changed E-Mail. Changed Web page address.
Linked with MoreFiles 1.4.6. Removed ability to delete records on the fly.

Description du logiciel:

On

The program is free. Support is partial. The file has been checked using
Disinfectant 3.7.1. I would greatly appreciate if you could make this file
available on your Mac archive. Thanks.

This is what G*Power does:

G*Power performs high-precision statistical power analyses for the most
common statistical tests in behavioral research, that is, t-tests, F-tests,
and Chi^2-tests.

G*Power computes
        (a) power values for given sample sizes, effect sizes
and alpha levels (post hoc power analyses),
        (b) sample sizes for given effect sizes, alpha levels,
and power values (a priori power analyses), and
        (c) alpha and beta values for given sample sizes,
effect sizes and beta/alpha ratios (compromise power analyses).

The program may be used to display graphically the relation between any two
of the relevant variables and it offers the opportunity to compute the
effect size measures from basic parameters defining the alternative
hypothesis.

MapMaker is a full-featured Macintosh imagemap editor with support for
the enormously popular and efficient clientside maps as well as the good
old serverside ones. With MapMaker you can easily open both jpegs and
gifs (picts are also suported) and create a map by just drawing the
objects on the image.

Features in version 1.1.2:

* Save maps in three different formats, NCSA, CERN and ClientSide
* Test your maps without server in the testmode
* Open and edit your old maps
* Browse your harddrive for links (no need to know the exact path)
* Opening of GIFs and JPEGs without QuickTime. MapMaker can PICTs too,
if you for some odd reason would like to do that.
* Zoom the image within the range of 25 - 500%
* Select the creator of the outputfiles
* Draw, move, duplicate, remove or resize ovals, circles, rectangles or
polygons (sorry, no resizing of polygons).
* Define alternative strings for users with non-graphical browsers in
Clientside or HTML 3.0
* Specify a value for onMouseOver in clientside maps
* Use the nohref-option in ClientSide maps

One of the best ways to improve your Macintosh's interface is to have
different desktop patterns that you can use. You just have to cut and
paste those patterns I made in your control panel called Desktop Patterns

It is a great way to complement an interface that was already better with
products like OneStep, Kaleidoscope, Aurora, or other interface modifiers.

Subject: [*] Neatnik 2.0.1

Neatnik 2.0 neatens up your Mac Finder desktop by setting the location, size
and "View" characteristics of folder windows. These characteristics can all
be set by hand, of course, but Neatnik allows you to batch-process the
contents of a folder (including all levels of enclosed folders), or an entire
disk.

For Mac OS 8 users, Neatnik can now set _all_ of the "View" characteristics
of each folder it processes. This includes such things as whether "Keep
arranged by..." or "Always snap to grid" is set, which column headings are
included in list views, the Icon size, and so on. Ordinarily with Mac OS 8,
these options have to be set individually for every folder; with Neatnik 2.0,
you can set them for a batch of folders (or every folder on your hard disk)
at once.

Neatnik works on three basic sets of folder window properties: location, size
and "View" characteristics. You can choose to change any or all of these
properties.

Folder window location:
The folder window locations can be set to offset from their "parent"
(containing) folder's location, so that successive levels of folders will
open to "cascading", successively-offset locations on your desktop.

Folder window size:
Folder windows can be sized in any of three ways: given the same size as
their parent folder, set to their "zoomed" size, or set to their "zoomed"
height and given their parent window's width.

Folder window "View" characteristics:
This is the aspect of Neatnik that will be most useful to Mac OS 8 users. As
noted above, with Neatnik you can set all the View characteristics for a
batch of windows at once, rather than having to painstakingly set them one
window at a time.

Many Mac users find the "one window at a time" view-setting of Mac OS 8
somewhat of a mixed blessing, or worse. In addition to Mac OS 8 users in
general, certain other groups of users will also find Neatnik particularly
valuable. Those whose work involves a great deal of folder-navigation --
perhaps on disks received from other users -- will find Neatnik an
indispensable tool for keeping things... well... neat! Producers of CD-ROM
and other on-disk publications can use Neatnik to process the master copy of
their disks before duplication, to ensure that the disk's folders will open
in orderly and predictable locations on the end user's desktops.

Neatnik is an application. It does not install any System extensions or
"patch" the system in any way. Because it is a standard Mac application,
rather than a simple compiled AppleScript, it has a sophisticated and elegant
user interface for setting its various preferences.

Program description:
YP Planetary Gear is designed to assist teachers and students when they
study the working of a planetary gear train. (this software is not related
in any way with astronomy).

A planetary gear train is a mechanism consisting of an assembly of meshed
gears: the sun gear, the planet carrier, and the ring gear. The automatic
transmission in an automobile uses the planetary gear train to transmit
power from the engine to the wheels at various controllable speeds and
torques. The transmission of power is varied by locking one or the other
of the three gears.

With YP Planetary Gear, you may observe the motion of a planetary gear
train when one of its parts is locked. The program also calculates the
ratio of the angular velocities when one of its parts is locked.

Required Hardware and Software: YP Planetary Gear runs on any Macintosh
computer with MAC OS 7.0 or later. It needs about 900 Kb on your hard disk
and 800 Kb of RAM. The software runs on older models with 68000 processors
(Mac Plus, Mac Classic), but simulations are slower.

with everyone.

Requirements:
Macintosh Computer running MacOS 8 with AppleScript=99 & the Desktop

Hows it work?!
Upon running this script it will prompt the user to choose the folder
from which to choose the images. Each time you restart (or each time

Yes Marcel, that is possible. In fact, that's what I did two weeks ago
with an old Hitachi single-speed CD-ROM player that I yanked from one of my
brother's older PC systems.
The problem is not the connection (SCSI is SCSI, as long as everyone
sticks to the ANSI specs) but the driver. The Apple driver will not work
with drives that are not supplied by Apple; this much like Apple's HD SC
Setup formatter software, but unlike that puppy fixing the CD-driver to
accept non-Apple drives is not as easy as flipping a few bits. Actually
that's what I've been trying to do for the last two weeks, but failed.
Not that I needed to do that, though. In the info-mac/cfg/ directory you
will find cd-sunrise, which will happily support your player. I have no
complaints about that little driver, other than that it slows everything
down if there's no disc in the drive at startup (but that might just be my
own problem related to a 'unit attention' condition; I won't get into that)
and that it doesn't support ISO 9660, audio or photo CD's (basicly only
HFS). That was the reason why I was futzing with the Apple driver. FWB's
CD-ROM Toolkit is the end-all solution in this case, but also a bit on the
overkill side considering the pricetag... (260 guilders or something)
Some closing arguments: why one would need a driver in the first place is
beyond me, because as I stated above, SCSI is SCSI and so are SCSI
commands.
Also: I learned a lot about the Apple CD driver and am wondering if the
changes that I made (which didn't make my drive work though) did some good.
The drive I'm using is ancient and therefor not SCSI-2 compliant (only
SCSI-1) which might be the problem I'm running into. I'd like to verify my
assumptions so if anyone who has a non-Apple drive is willing to test my
modified please let me know.
Besides: I heard that the Apple CD driver that came with sys 7.6 will
happily work with third-party drives. My source tells me this support was
dropped when they updated the driver for sys 7.6.1. Needless to say that
I'm interested in getting my hands on the driver that came with 7.6 to
verify that rumor. If anyone could be so kind?

Subject: A sad day

Today has started badly. It has been announced on the main morning news
bulletin, listened by the majority of the UK's professional people, that
Microsoft's Bill Gates is to meet the UK's Prime Minister Tony Blair to
talk about giving every school child their own email address by 2002 and
substantially increasing the number of computers in schools.

Microsoft is, of course, the best company to be talking to Mr Blair. They
have the size and the money to do anything they want to to increase their
market presence: purchasing a whole day's worth of "The Times" (surely the
World's most established newspaper) and giving it away; publishing a series
of sections as inserts in Sunday Newspapers; "giving" schools operating
systems and internet software to get school children addicted to their
style of working.

Mr Blair is keen to mold himself as an international "presidential" player
and Mr Gates is keen to present himself as a statesman so the two mixing to
maximise their own aims is really pretty sensible. But doesn't this mutual
backslapping also appear as an endorsement by the UK's government of
Microsoft's products? Its at times like this that Apple, IBM, Sun, Acorn
and all the other OS companies have to do something sensible in return.
Couldn't Apple give Mr Blair an example of their worth? Couldn't Sun show
him the benefits of Pure Java? Couldn't IBM show him how it can link
schools together? Couldn't Acorn show how UK based computer technology can
compete on a world scale?

Come on Mr Jobs, you're supposed to be Mr Charismatic, instead of upsetting
everyone, do something before its too late.

Snooping the "macfixit" web site this evening, I found that Apple has
just released version 1.3.1 of Drive Setup. OK, I asked for a copy. No
joy. Sorry, we're busy.

For the hallibut I switched over to Ric Fords "macintouch" site, saw
the same announcement, asked for a copy, and was connected immediately.
To the 9th clone of Apple's ftp site. Methinks Ric might have a more
flexible link than the one in macfixit. Attend, my children.

The download was one of those goofy DiskCopy 6.1 images that are vaguely
useful. Double-click the image (Only if you have 61) and get a virtual
floppy on your desktop.

I maintain that 61 was not one of Apple's more brilliant moves. Smarter
than bringing Jobs back, true. But still goofy.

Apple gives a whole lot of runaround as to how to actually use DS131.
Seemed a bit much. Yup, both Sys8 Disk Tools (68k and PPC) floppies have
plenty of room to replace the vanilla DS Lite 1.3 with the new 1.3.1
non-lite version. I did it. It worked.

So why do the Sys8 DT floppies even have a "lite" version of DS? What
is it, and why should we care? Enquiring minds want to know.

Or not.

I am stumped by a monitor problem and hope someone out there might hold a

I have an Apple 16" Color Monitor and I'd like to run it faster and at a
higher resolution than the default 832 x 624 pixel resolution. I had hoped
I could add more VRAM to the on-board video and that would improve speed

832 x 624 and gives no other resolutions. It's not a multisync monitor.

My questions are, will more VRAM increase (a) the display speed or (b) the
resolution of this monitor? I don't care about pixel depth because I
already get the thousands of colours my architectural program prefers.
