Correct me if I'm wrong:
The 1400 has 32-bit addressing on as a default, and it cannot be turned
off. (I just looked at two, one running 7.5.3, and the other 7.6. Neither
presented the option. New hardware-new rules.)
The 630, I suspect the same, at least under 7.6. And since I cannot recall
ever having to turn on 32-bit addressing when upgrading a 63x, I think the
same is true..

Subject: Amiga_v_Mac

Hi there gurus,

I need some backup from evangelistas with Amiga know-how to help settle a
difference of opinion about who had it first: 8 bit colour/3D rendering,
Amiga or Mac? My friend the Ami geek believes that Amiga were the first
platform to implement the use of 8 bit colour, and that 3D rendering
programs were first developed on Ami's. I beg to differ, but not having the
history of the Amiga in-house I can only hope one of you Digesters can
throw a little light on this dispute. At stake is the promise that my
friend will buy a Power Mac next time he buys a computer. He says he
couldn't bear the thought of using an OS which wasn't an innovator.
Mmmmm....

TIA

I would like to thank those who wrote in with suggestions regarding my
Eudora Pro/Netscape problem (see below.) Bo Bjulen's answer (also below)
was indeed the correct diagnosis, and I thank him for his insight.

I would also like to thank the community here at Info-Mac Digest for the
environment of support. The Wintel world never had it so good as this!

Subject: Invisible file on CD-ROM

I recently purchased an audio CD: Toad The Wet Sprocket's "Coil." It
so happens that there is an extra track which is in .mov format, and so
it can only be heard through a computer. The problem is this; the .mov
file is invisible, and there's no way (that I know) to change the
visibility of a file on a write-protected disk.

It IS possible to hear the song though; the CD manufacturers require
that you go to the official Toad web site and follow a link
("file:///toad/silo.mov") which causes Netscape to open the file. Is
there any way to open this thing without having to bring in netscape?
And why did they make it such a pain to get to the music in the first
place?

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

I am thinking of purchasing a 6500/300 and upgrading to
another mg from 64.

I also have a 550 HP printer that I would like to use.

Presently it is hooked to a performa 575. Will that
printer be compatible with the 6500 or will I have to buy a new
cable.

Also will I be able to upgrade to OS 8 eventually.

I know I've seen this mentioned before, but have forgotten the fix.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can forward it to me!

I'm using MSWord 6.01a on a PowerMac6100/80 and find that the File menu
can take up to ten seconds to pull down on first use. I have the bug fix
from MS....4.2xupdate for PowerMac, but it doesn't make any difference.
Even with extensions off it takes 10 seconds.

Thanks!

Has anyone used one of these devices? I know HP makes an inkjet one.
Is this usable for light office copying? How well does it integrate
with the Macintosh? What price range are we talking about? Is laser
worth it in terms of price/quality/upkeep?

Subject: Need to change file extensions based on file types and names

I recently upgraded from Freehand 5 to Freehand 7, and as I re-save files
in the new format, I save them with the original names, which I had
previously given extensions of ".FH5" (I'm on a Mac, but I still find
extensions very useful). (I use the "ClickSaveAs" utility to make this
easier.) Now, however, I have numerous files which say ".FH5" but are
actually Freehand 7 files, and I would like to create a batch file or the
equivalent with which I can periodically scan the hard drive and do the
following:

if file name ends in ".FH5"
   and creator is "FH70"
change last letter of filename to "7"

Is this a task for Applescript, Frontier, Quickeys, or something else?

Subject: NU 351 Updater (C)

Technology is grand.

According to the new MacWeek, Norton Utilities 3.5 is not exactly
compatible with the new OS 8. But Symantec has a 3.5.1 update for
Disk Doctor, Speed Disk, and Filesaver that'll fix everything.

Of goody, says I. I got the updaters from the Symantec web site. And
went duh.

What is wrong with this picture? Norton utilities 3.5 comes on a CD-ROM.
Ever try to update a CD-ROM? Gee, I hope not.

What exactly are we supposed to actually do with the NU 351 updaters?

I updated the NU stuff on my HD, which will pretty much guarantee that
my externals (HD and M/O drives) are up to snuff. But what about the
internal HD itself? NU will diagnose, but not fix, the boot drive.

I'm far from being blown out of the water. Our home Macs have attached
M/O drives. I backed up NU 3.5 to an M/O disc. M/O is read/write, so I
just applied the 351 updaters to the files on the M/O disc. No problem,
mon. At the store my lord and master found a few extra end-year bucks
and got me a CD-R writer. He thinks buying me toys makes me happy. He's
wrong, but I'll take what I can get. I dragged the NU 3.5 disc to a folder
on my HD, applied the 351 updates to the files on that folder, then copied
the whole shebang to a new CD-R disc.

Am I wrong to doubt that many (most?) of you have either option?

I can't believe that Symantec,Inc, has 14 neurons among them firing at
the same time.

Little wonder that Symantec has pretty much disappeared from the net
unless you pay up-front money to talk to them.

Rude bastards.

And please. Don't tell me about the Symantec news groups that my ISPs
don't subscribe to. If they were worth the powder to blow its nose, I
suspect Virginia Tech or AT&T would subscribe.

Subject: Views Control Panel refuses to accept changes

I'm on a Power Computing Power 100, System 7.6.1, 40 megs RAM, 1 gig HD.
Somehow, the Views control panel got reset to factory defaults, and refuses
to accept changes (font, columns, grid, etc.). The changes do take effect
at the time I make them, but are gone when I reboot. Deleting the Finder
prefs file has no effect. The clock battery was just replaced, and the
clock still keeps the proper time, so it's not a PRAM problem (or do I need
to zap it?).
