AppleTree is an application for statistical modelling.
It allows to fit multinomial models of arbitrary size to frequency data
using the "General Processing Tree" algorithm developed by Hu and
Batchelder (1994). AppleTree can read model files and data files written
for the MS-DOS "MBT" program developed by Xiangen Hu, University of
Memphis, Tennessee.
AppleTree is freeware. It runs natively on both 680x0 and PowerPC Macs.

See <http://www.psychologie.uni-trier.de:8000/projects/AppleTree.html> for
latest informations.

Changes since version 1.0.3:
* The parameter estimation process is significantly faster than in previous
versions.
* Some commands are moved from the AppleTree window to the menu bar.
* Extended Drag&Drop support: Equation files can be dropped on the Model
field. Data files can be dropped on the Data field. Tree graphs can be
dragged from their window to any other program supporting Drag&Drop for
PICTs.
* Trees and categories can now have names instead of numbers.
* The order of parameters in the branch equations must be the same as their
order in the tree.
* Minor cosmetic changes

Requirements
* MacOS 7.5 or later
* Motorola 68020 or better (no FPU required) or any PowerPC.
  PowerPC recommended.

BackgroundWarper 1.0 - (demo version) creates seamless geometrical
background patterns yet unseen in Web pages. Instead of drawing the
tiles yourself with brushes, you set parameters (of warpers, squishing
and colours). In the Warping settings you set the tile size, the warpers
and their parameters. In the Squishing settings are choices such as of 8
appearences (waves, droplets, toothpaste etc.) with some more parameters
and in the Rendering settings you set the colours of the paper, the
light sources and the shades, using hints to make them harmonize.
Explications come in the Help menu. BackgroundWarper (demo) comes with
examples (ready to use). It has a limited number of warpers and some
less explication with respect to the full version.

Subject: [*] HTML Colors v1.0

HTML Colors will help you design a visually pleasing color scheme for
your web page, allowing you complete control over the text color, link
color, visited link color, active link color, and background color. You
choose the colors using the Apple color picker, HTML Colors
automatically converts them to hexadecimal, and you can then instantly
see the results in a preview window -- without launching a browser.

After you've found a color scheme you like, you just press the "copy"
button and paste the text into your favorite HTML editor, such as
BBEdit. The BODY tag appears with all of your color choices in hex
format. You can also copy the BODY tag from an existing HTML document
and paste it into HTML Colors. Poof! HTML Colors will parse the tag
and display your colors in the preview window, ready for editing!

Invaluable, small, and quick. This one goes in your Apple Menu. :)

HTML Colors is US$10 shareware for commercial use. It is ABSOLUTELY FREE
for personal use.

Subject: [*] Jon's Commands 2.0

Here is the eagerly awaited Jon's Commands 2.0 release. This version of my
collection of AppleScript scripting additions includes several new commands
and a new coercion, as well as a number of improvements to existing
commands.

Here's a summary of the recent changes:

* Made "alias information" command take an alias descriptor also instead of
only alias files. This could affect scripts since an alias to an alias file
will now return info about the alias instead of the alias file.

* Made "machine environment" command return Open Transport status and
hardware ethernet address if OT is running.

* Added "load embedded scripting additions" command.

* Reworked docs in HTML.

* Bumped the version up to 2.0 just for the heck of it.

* Extensive modifications to "screen list" and "set screens to" commands to
make screen ids 1 based, add actual screen names, refresh rates and lists
of possible resolutions. Unfortunately, dealing with the refresh rate
requires Display Manager 2, which is included in System 7.5.3 and available
separately. If DM2 is not installed, the "screen list" command will not
return refresh rate or supported resolutions and the "set screens to"
command will error if you try to change the refresh rate. Added "safe
resolution" property, as well as adding "resultion index" for more reliable
access to the various resolution modes.

This and my other software is always available on my web site:

Subject: [*] Les fleurs du mal

This archive contains the French language text of "Les fleurs du mal" by
Charles Baudelaire (1861 edition), in setext format.

The text is in 8-bit Mac encoding, without line endings: a carriage
return indicates the end of a paragraph or of a line of verse.

Setext is a slightly enhanced text format. It can be read with any text
editor/word processor, but looks best when viewed with a
setext-compatible browser, such as Akif Eyler's EasyView

Subject: [*] Mega Change 1.1

MEGA CHANGE 1.1 Mega Change is a simple utility that changes files to
open up in the picture viewing program of your choice. For example one
can change Photoshop JPEG files to open up in GraphicConverter instead
of Photoshop when the file is clicked on. This application is great for
newsgroup use because it also recognizes .zip and .hqx files and changes
them to open in StuffIt Expander=81. All the Mega Change converters
support the use of YA-Base64's (commonly used to convert binary files to
usable form) numbering format of duplicate files (rock.jpg,
rock.jpg.02,rock.jpg.03) through .09. Mega Change also comes in handy
when scanner software saves files to open up in their own programs
(UMAX-VistaScan). Mega Change can batch process folders, or one file at
a time. When batch processing Mega Change targets only files that end
with a certain tag (.jpg .gif) or are already that type of file. Simply
drop the files you want to change on the application and it is
converted. There is no need to worry about accidentally changing any
other files. Mega Change filters out all files that aren't pictures, so
you could drop your hard drive on Mega Change and all the pictures would
be changed.

Mega Change 1.1 works with these applications: - GraphicConverter -
JPEGView - Photoshop - ZipIt

If you planned to collect this program on the Info-Mac CD-ROM, please
contact following. (This file is copyrighted by the original author Chad
Magendanz, the Japanization staffs, and MuON which is Macintosh Users'
group in Japan.)

- Original Author: Chad Magendanz <chad@halcyon.com>
- Representative of translators: Yoshimichi Kawamoto <kawamoto@muon.or.jp>
- MuON's Foreign relations: Takaaki Hiroshige <hiropon@muon.or.jp>

Abstract:

This is a Japanized version of ShrinkWrap version 2.1, which is a useful
utility originally written by Chad Magendanz. It was localized for Japanese
Macintosh community by MuON ( Macintosh Users' group On Network).

>> NOTE:This version (2.1JP1) is NOT an updated version of 2.1.<<

ShrinkWrap is a utility made to manipulate all types of disks and disk
images on the Macintosh.

Using ShrinkWrap, you can create disk images by simply dragging and
dropping your drive icons onto the ShrinkWrap icon. It is implementing
extensive drag and drop and AppleScript support, and supporting almost all
known image file formats, including its new self-mounting image files.

If you have the StuffIt Engine installed, ShrinkWrap will automatically
compress, decompress or encrypt the image files as they're created,
mounted, copied or converted according to the options you set in
preferences.

This Japanized version requires a Japanese system (i.e., KanjiTalk) 7.x or
better, or an English system 7.x or better with a suitable version of
Japanese Language Kit.

Meanwhile you can make the cookies slide along one of the three

the box size, the number of colours used, random arrivals of new cookies
and different scoring methods (ex. bonus if at the last taking move all
the corners are empty). The HELP menu gives a more detailed description
of the options. Requirements: no color, no screen size, System 7 only
for one type of random arrival out of three (which will deactivate on
previous systems). Seemed to work fine on an SE30 / System 6.0.4 .

Registered users of SndSampler 2.x may upgrade to 3.x for a special fee.
----------------------------
New in 3.4: built-in IMA 4:1, misc. fixes and improvements.
----------------------------
Version 3.4 is the latest and greatest release of SndSampler, the ultimate
Macintosh sound tool. It is specifically designed for discriminating users
who want to create sounds for use with other applications. You can just
have a lot of fun with it, too! Here are some of SndSampler's more salient
features:
- Supports 8 and 16-bit, mono/stereo, sample rates up to 64 kHz
- Native file formats: System 7 sound file, AIFF, AIFF-C
- Extracts/saves sound ('snd ') resources from/to any file or application
- Allows you to record sound data directly to your hard drive so you can
create sounds bigger than RAM
- AIFF segmenting facilitates working on sounds that are bigger than RAM
- Imports CD audio directly from the CD
- Imports/exports: Sun, NeXT, WAVE, QuickTime movies, raw audio
- Sun, NeXT, and WAVE file handling doesn't rely on QuickTime or the Sound
Manager
- Extensive batch processing capabilities: just drop all 800 files you want
to downsample (for example) onto SndSampler's icon while holding down the
cmd key
- Allows synching of sounds to QuickTime movies and provides other uncommon
movie-editing features
- Compression: MACE 3:1, MACE 6:1, ulaw 2:1, IMA 4:1
- ulaw 2:1 de/compression doesn't rely on QuickTime or the Sound Manager
(Apple's ulaw codec is buggy)
- Many fx: echo, reverb, chorus, flange, pitch bend, dynamic pan, dynamic
fade, etc.
- Can open up to 70 sounds at once
- Includes special code to make the Pro Audio Spectrum PAS16 sound card
work correctly
- Extensive User's Guide in RTF format (please read!)
- Incredibly compact: only requires about 500K on your hard disk!
- Doesn't waste RAM on fancy graphics

"Verbs&Nouns" is an application that helps you to learn the inflection
patterns of verbs and nouns in a foreign language. The program has many
other useful features to help you in learning or researching a foreign
language. It can be used as a dictionary as well.

The program lets you create a database of words. You can easily construct
the inflection rules for words that are regular. You can include other
information about each word, such as a translation, grammar
characteristics, comments, etc. The program automatically generates
exercises to allow you to practise inflection or translation. You can
identify many groups of words to use them in exercises or for browsing.
The application supports sound for browsing and exercises.

There are some inflection dictionaries for this program available already.

The new version offers so many great new features that it
should be called 2.0. However, since we did already reserve
this version number for the next great step (the client server solution)
this version is just called 1.8. Here is a list of the most
important new features of version 1.8:

+ Support of AppleEvents and AppleScript
+ Smooth integration with Metrowerks CodeWarrior IDE
(compatible with CW IDE 1.7.4 as well as with the upcoming CW IDE 2.0)
 + Essential parts PowerPC native
+ Fetch and Store operations are backgroundable
+ Show differences between versions (not only for text files!)
+ Configurable local file locking (Finder flag or 'ckid' resource)
+ Improved handling of local files including the creation of folder structures
+ Change local path prefix command allows to "move" whole subtrees
 + Improved user interface
+ Improved and bigger dialogs for Store & Fetch commands
+ View command lets you easily open any object of the version pool
+ Significant performance improvements in many places

This submission contains the VOODOO package together with
the complete online manual. The application will
ask for a serial number. If you don't have a serial number,
the package will be a full-featured but time-limited demo.

Subject: [*] Writing About Reading

The WritingReading HyperCard stack was developed as a tool to help
pupils in S3 (14-15 years old) develop report writing skills for
literature reports. It works by providing a variety of prompts to
which pupils can respond in specific terms. These responses are then
collated into a first draft with tools for pupils to resequence
paragraphs and add text. Reports can then be exported as a text file
for finishing off in a standard word processor. As well as helping to
write specific reports, the elements of a simple report structure is
laid bare for pupils so that they will be able to attempt similar
reports themselves, perhaps after completing 2 or 3 computer-assisted
reports.

The original stack was writtne in 1993 using HyperCard 1.2.2. The
stack has been updated to work with HyperCard 2.1 and above but
hasn't otherwise been altered. MacinTalk was originally needed for
the Speak Report button to operate, but the Speech Manager in system
7.5 will removes the need for MacinTalk.

TeachText or SimpleText (which you are using now to read these notes)
can also be used to read, edit, and print the text files created by
the report card in the stack - if you haven't got a word processor.
